Small Win Coaching

Coaching Strategies

Coaching to create a little learning today, is the best way to move people through the process of changing their behavior or advancing their skills. This useful whitepaper shares strategies for coaching that develop all levels of learners.

Here’s how it begins: “I was stupid today, but I’ll be smarter tomorrow.’ This direct quote from one of my team members happened about a year ago and has become one of the running jokes around our office. For, as much as it is inappropriate (and never helpful) to call a person “stupid”, from time to time, we all make mistakes that there’s no better explanation for. And, since Liza was referring to herself, correcting the mistake, committing to be more careful in the future and laughing at the same time, as the Coach, I consider this an all around ‘win’.

Creating an environment where people learn from their mistakes, and focus on doing better the next time, is the purpose of an effective coaching program. We can’t eliminate the fact that we are human beings and imperfect. That we have bad days, or misunderstandings, or take a while to learn some new skills is part of the reality of being human. Coaching is what allows us to work with our humanity instead of against it.”
